Francoise Freedman – ‘Pelvic alignment and stability: insights and practice’
This one day training with Françoise Freedman will have pelvic alignment and stability as a special focus in both a preventive and a therapeutic perspective. Pelvic girdle pain (PGP), often related to chronic or acute lower back pain and sciatica and to reproductive health disorders, is a common ailment that particularly affects women. With illustrations and experiential practices supported by precise teaching points, traditional teachings about the circulation of prana are illuminated by recent findings about the relationships between parasympathetic and sympathetic modes, yoga breathing, the endocrine glands and the heart. The recently highlighted importance of the fascia is explored in relation to physical and emotional pelvic stability through various sets of original micro-movements made accessible to all by the use of common props. ‘Relaxed stretching’, isometric ‘tone-release’, the interplay between the three diaphragms (uvular, thoracic and pelvic) and ‘neutral psoas’ allow effortless and deeper breathing and promote optimal hormonal balance. Pelvic floor practices, developed from Tantra in the light of the differences between male and female pelvic anatomy, promote deep pelvic toning, release of stress and old energetic blockages besides offering pain reduction. This allows clarifications around the use of Moola Bandha and ‘pelvic floor lifts’. Aspects of disease prevention and yoga therapy are explored in relation to the lower chakras and the sacral plexus, illustrated with simple practices that are both easy to experience and effective, for men as well as for women.
At the end of the day, participants will:
| • | perceive pelvic misalignments conducive to instability and pain with associated impaired energy flows: ‘seeing body-minds’ with full respect for persons |
| • | be able to offer simple therapeutic alternatives to pelvic pain sufferers in the midst of general classes as well as specific sequences for one-to-one yoga therapy, with insights on instruction and specific teaching points |
| • | have a clearer and richer understanding of the anatomy of Pranayama and its therapeutic effects in relation to the autonomic nervous system |
| • | be able to offer a novel set of pelvic floor practices and to explain its greater merits in contrast with mainstream models of pelvic floor toning |
| • | gain new insights about how yoga can enliven connections between core and extremities, cranium and tailbone, abdominal and back muscles, the three diaphragms |
| • | be more aware of the central role of pelvic alignment in the geometry of classic Asana, with the breath nurturing the life centre (Hara) through the dynamic creation of fulcra in relation to the pelvic joints. |

Saturday 20th November
Simon Low will lead the teaching and discussion throughout Sunday
Session 1
Simon’s intention is to facilitate open discussion around issues affecting you as teachers and help you find creative and effective solutions. These issues can be within any area of teaching. Please note that questions forwarded to Simon in advance, by e-mail, will be addressed first.
Session 2
Modifications in Surya Namaskar, Virabhadrasana 1 & 2, & Trikonasa for active students requiring focused SI and back care. Simon has received a large number of requests to offer guidance for teachers to help the many students with an active regular practice that need modifications for SI and lumbar issues, but due to their nature tend to accept pain or problems rather than take remedial practices or modifications that they feel 'separate' them from the general class activities and direction. Using the above asana as examples, we will explore how small modifications can prove to be very accessible and 'inclusive' enabling all your students to fully participate in your classes through the classic standing poses. This will be a practical session.
Session 3
Asana theory and practice clinic. In this session Simon will address questions and offer guidance relating to any asana that is requested. Please send clear and concise questions to Simon by e-mail prior to the weekend. If time allows questions arising from practices and teachings over the weekend will also be addressed. This is primarily a practical session.
Closing chant and guided meditation.
