THE WORKSHOP
Julie Gudmestad returns to London to share another weekend of essential yoga wisdom. Last years visit generated our best ever feedback from attendees due to Julie’s informed, clear, practical & inspiring teaching style.
This workshop is designed to acquaint yoga students, teacher-trainees and teachers with anatomical vocabulary, musculoskeletal structures and movement patterns in relation to the yoga asanas. Our particular focus for the workshop will be on the neck, shoulder and upper back. Our time together will involve lecture, demonstration and discussion as well as direct work in the asanas. We will:
| • |
Lean to “see” muscles in action, and correctly describe the movement |
| • |
Understand how muscles interact to form movement patterns in yoga poses |
| • |
See demonstrations of both structure and function |
| • |
Discuss common student problems in these areas & explore ways to work with them in yoga asanas |
| • |
Participate in asana practice sessions that allow you to feel, in your own body, the actions of muscles and the dramatic effects of subtle changes in alignment |
Julie presents her material & teachings in a very clear, practical & accessible manner, reflecting her 30 years experience as a teacher & physical therapist. Students can expect to learn material & skills that will be highly user-friendly in both the teaching & practice environments. Julie addresses areas of the anatomy which are common areas of injury, acute & chronic pain & poor postural awareness, & shares knowledge & guidance to help students become more ‘aware’ & skilled in the effective teaching & practice of yoga in a therapeutic context. Time will be allocated for students’ questions & answers. Sessions are inter-active & include both lecture & practical studies.
Each day will begin with a overview of the subject covered & a period of clarity around correct anatomical language, followed by ‘hands-on’ sessions of lecture, asana practice, & small group practical analysis & exploration.
Students will come away with a profoundly clear practical & theoretical understanding of the areas covered within the workshops.
Come dressed for asana practice, with mat, strap & wooden block (if possible).
The workshop is open to students, teachers & trainee teachers of all styles & schools of yoga with an interest in A&P & its practical understanding & application within the asana practice. A basic knowledge of A&P is helpful. No new beginners please, although students with a gentle or modified practice are most welcome.
“With my interest in anatomy and physiology – finding a profound knowledge of the human body combined with a gift for clear communication is a privilege and a joy. Julie’s teaching has been of far reaching and lasting value both to my Yoga teaching and my personal practice” – Loretta Stowell
