Julie Gudmestad returns to London to share another weekend of essential yoga wisdom. In these classes, you will receive much more than a traditional classroom lecture on anatomical terminology, bones, muscles and joints. In a hands-on, open for questions environment you will:
| • | learn to “see” muscles in action, and correctly describe their movement; |
| • | understand how muscles interact to form movement patterns in yoga postures; |
| • | understand how muscles interact to form movement patterns in yoga postures; |
| • | see demonstrations of structure and function of muscles and joints; |
| • | practise postures which allow you to feel in your own body the actions of muscles and the dramatic affects of subtle changes in alignment; |
| • | understand how good alignment in postures can help prevent injuries and even facilitate healing, while “bad” alignment can actually cause or contribute to injuries and problems. |
Experience the deep work in the postures that is made accessible by understanding the structures that lie beneath the skin. Bones, joints and muscles will be studied at the beginning of each session, followed by direct work in the postures to illustrate the structures and movement patterns just studied. Topics will include:
| • | postures to improve shoulder flexibility; |
| • | how to build shoulder strength; |
| • | why are the shoulderblade muscles so important (but so little known) to yoga practitioners; |
| • | how to protect and strengthen the neck in yoga. |
Sessions are interactive and will include both lecture and practical studies. Each day will begin with a overview of the subject covered and a period of clarity around correct anatomical language, followed by ‘hands-on’ sessions of lecture, asana practice and small group practical analysis and exploration.

Teachers, trainee teachers and students of all styles of yoga with at least one year of regular practice are welcome. Some basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology will be helpful. Although the workshop is not suitable for complete beginners, students with a gentle or modified practice are most welcome. Because this is not strictly a therapeutics workshop, it is not recommended for anyone with an acute injury or severely limited mobility.

“I love how she is able to make anatomy such an exciting and accessible subject and relate it so helpfully to our yoga practice and teaching experience. Moreover, she is a truly special person whom I like and respect enormously.” Andrea Hanagarth (Yoga Academy teacher), May 2010
